If you are, keep reading, we&#8217;ll answer all your questions including:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Can you yse <strong>hydrogen peroxide as mouthwash<\/strong>?<\/li>    <li>How do you dilute hydrogen peroxide for mouthwash?<\/li>    <li>Are there any <strong>hydrogen peroxide mouthwash side effects<\/strong>?<\/li> <\/ul>    <p>We also asked a few dentists from different dental practices for their opinions on using hydrogen peroxide mouthwash.<\/p>    <p>An important note before we begin: when we refer to hydrogen peroxide (HP) for use in mouth rinses, we are never referring to a solution with a concentration of more than 3%, and even then you should dilute it further with water.<\/p>    <p>If have any concerns about your dental health, you should always speak to a dentist first. <\/p>    <h2 id=\"what-is-hydrogen-peroxide\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is hydrogen peroxide?<\/h2>   <div class=\"wp-block-image\"> <figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/07\/man-pointing-at-white-smile.jpg\" alt=\"peroxide hydrogen mouthwash\" class=\"wp-image-18025\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Can hydrogen peroxide give you a healthy smile?<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>   <p>Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent that has disinfectant, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. It is also a mild antiseptic with a variety of household uses, including cleaning countertops and preventing infection in minor cuts and burns. <\/p>    <p>In diluted concentrations, with the degree of dilution depending on usage, it should be safe to use but may burn skin and should never be swallowed. <\/p>    <h2 id=\"benefits-of-hydrogen-peroxide-as-a-mouthwash\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash<\/h2>    <p>The benefits of using <strong>hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash <\/strong>for dental health include:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Soothing sore throats:<\/strong> HP has antibacterial properties that help your body fight off infections that cause sore throats. It also helps hardened or thick mucus in your throat loosen and drain better, relieving irritation.<\/li>    <li><strong>Treating gum disease: <\/strong>Because of HP&#8217;s antibacterial properties, it can also help treat gum disease and improve oral health. A study in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-017-12514-0\" target=\"_blank\">Scientific Reports<\/a> found that HP made participants&#8217; gums healthier and reduced amounts of the periodontal pathogen <em>Porphyromonas gingivalis<\/em>, which causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/gingivitis-treatment-symptoms\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gingivitis<\/a>. <\/li>    <li><strong>Healing canker sores:<\/strong> HP is antiseptic, which helps heal cuts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/mouth-ulcer-treatment\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">canker sores<\/a>. When applied to a cut or sore, the HP foams and releases oxygen, which helps clean the area and reduce bacteria.<\/li>    <li><strong>Reducing the spread of COVID from patients to dentists: <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/368\/bmj.m1252\/rr-27\" target=\"_blank\">Ongoing studies<\/a> look to determine the efficacy of HP in limiting dentists&#8217; exposure to COVID from their patients.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 id=\"hydrogen-peroxide-mouthwash-side-effects-and-risks\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hydrogen peroxide mouthwash side effects and risks<\/h2>   <div class=\"wp-block-image\"> <figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/07\/mouth-ulcer.jpg\" alt=\"peroxide mouthwash uk\" class=\"wp-image-4354\" style=\"width:300px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">HP can help heal mouth sores.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>   <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>Harmful when ingested:<\/strong> Swallowing too much HP can cause serious side effects, including burning of the digestive tract, nausea, and vomiting.<\/li>    <li><strong>Black hairy tongue<\/strong>: This is a harmless and temporary oral condition that looks a lot worse than it is! It can happen when using mouth rinses with oxidizing agents like peroxide.<\/li>    <li><strong>Weakened enamel:<\/strong> Hydrogen peroxide can damage tooth enamel if used for too long, too often, or in too high concentrations.<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 id=\"what-are-dentists-saying\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are dentists saying?<\/h2>    <p>Dr J. Salim from Sutton Place Dental Associates says that not all dentists agree about the safety of hydrogen peroxide. He says that 1% HP solutions are excellent antibacterial agents, but they shouldn&#8217;t be used too often or for too long. <\/p>    <p>Hydrogen peroxide can penetrate the enamel, dentin, and collagen-rich tissue found within the dentin, damaging it as a result. He also doesn&#8217;t recommend HP rinses as a whitening solution.<\/p>      <div class=\"blue-quote without-author\">   <p>&#8220;To obtain meaningful teeth whitening results with HP-based mouth rinses, you would need high concentrations which could harm your oral mucosa.&#8221;<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>   <p>He goes on to say that higher concentrations are safe for professional dental use because your gums are protected with hardening resins or a liquid rubber dam.<\/p>    <p>Another dentist, Dr Sonal Bhoot from Dental Expressions Leawood agrees that a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash can reduce bacterial growth, but he is more generous in promoting it as a way to whiten teeth\u2014only, of course, when used with the &#8220;utmost care and precaution.&#8221;<\/p>    <p>Dr William Cranford from Cranford Dental says it can help lower the levels of bacteria in the mouth for a short period of time. For this reason, in fact, during the COVID pandemic, he and his team asked patients to gargle with a <strong>hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse<\/strong> prior to going in for dental treatment.<\/p>    <p>Before gargling with peroxide, Dr Cranford advises mixing water with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to obtain a 1% solution. At that percentage, he says, hydrogen peroxide is no longer carcinogenic.<\/p>      <div class=\"blue-quote without-author\">   <p>&#8220;If it makes your mouth feel better, use HP as a mouth rinse; however, this does not clean the teeth as brushing does. We do not recommend HP for bleaching the teeth or to deal with decay or sore teeth or gums.&#8221;<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>   <p>Dr William Cranford also warns that using it too much can turn your tongue black!<\/p>    <p>Finally, Dr Esteban Kosak from Symptoms Care says that you should use hydrogen peroxide alongside regular brushing. <\/p>      <div class=\"blue-quote without-author\">   <p>&#8220;Using hydrogen peroxide with regular brushing and flossing reduces gum inflammation.&#8221;<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>   <p>He also says that it can whiten teeth, but using it every day will negatively impact your oral health. In fact, he recommends limiting use to just a few times per month.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary of dentist opinions on mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide<\/h3>    <p>Of all of the dentists we asked, most could agree that HP mouth rinses:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Are not recommended for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/teeth-whitening\/hydrogen-peroxide-teeth-whitening\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"24282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teeth whitening<\/a><\/li>    <li>Shouldn&#8217;t be used as a mouth rinse in concentrations of more than 3%<\/li>    <li>Should NEVER be swallowed<\/li>    <li>Reduce levels of bacteria in the mouth<\/li>    <li>Can temporarily help with gum inflammation and gingivitis<\/li>    <li>Can help soothe a sore throat<\/li> <\/ul>    <h2 id=\"how-to-make-hydrogen-peroxide-mouthwash\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make hydrogen peroxide mouthwash<\/h2>    <p>There are quite a few different homemade mouthwash recipes using hydrogen peroxide available. So, to make sure you are using a recipe that uses a safely diluted amount of hydrogen peroxide, remember the following rule.  Mix 1 part <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3cpJ02z\" target=\"_blank\">3% peroxide solution<\/a> with 2 parts water. This mouth rinse can soothe gums and canker sores, including mouth irritation caused by cancer treatment. <\/p>    <p>It can also be gargled to soothe a sore throat and to get rid of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/oral-hygiene\/halitosis-bad-breath\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"9285\" target=\"_blank\">bad breath<\/a>. Baking soda is alkaline, so it will neutralize acids that irritate sores and kill bad bacteria so you can heal faster. Unless directed by your doctor, this mouth rinse is for temporary use.<\/p>    <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hydrogen peroxide baking soda mouthwash<\/h4>    <p>Although we are looking at alternatives to HP mouthwashes, it&#8217;s worth noting that it is possible to use both hydrogen peroxide and baking soda as ingredients in a mouth rinse. In fact, some say that baking soda, when used with hydrogen peroxide can amplify the antimicrobial effects of hydrogen peroxide. <\/p>    <p>If you are concerned about the safety of <strong>hydrogen peroxide baking soda mouthwash<\/strong>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9487836\/\" target=\"_blank\">this study<\/a> shows that these ingredients can be safely used together. And, they won&#8217;t have a damaging effect on your dental health so as long as you don&#8217;t use this mouthwash regularly.   <\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saltwater rinse<\/h3>    <p>An even easier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/oral-hygiene\/best-mouthwash\/best-natural-mouthwash\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"22489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">natural mouth rinse<\/a> to throw together is saltwater. Saltwater is another remedy for sore throats, canker sores, and inflamed gums, as it has antibacterial and healing properties. <\/p>    <p>It creates an alkaline environment in your mouth so acids won&#8217;t cause more irritation.
