A horizontal overbite (an &#8216;overjet&#8217;) causes the upper teeth to protrude at the front of the mouth. When very pronounced, you might hear this called &#8216;buck teeth&#8217;, but we will refrain from using that term here. An overjet may occur along with an <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/malocclusion-crooked-teeth\/open-bite\/\" target=\"_blank\">open bite<\/a>, meaning there is a vertical gap between the upper and lower teeth.<\/p>    <p>When the vertical overlap is 2-4mm, or around 30% of the lower teeth is covered, this is considered normal. A <strong>deep overbite<\/strong>, also known as a deep bite,&nbsp;occurs when the teeth overlap by 4-6mm or more. Some of the common reasons include:<\/p>    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>Genetics<\/li>    <li>A jaw that doesn\u2019t form properly as a foetus<\/li>    <li>Thumb sucking as a child<\/li>    <li>Overusing a bottle or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/babies-children\/dummy-teeth\/\" target=\"_blank\">dummy<\/a> as a baby<\/li>    <li>Tongue thrusting<\/li>    <li>Nail biting<\/li>    <li>Excessive chewing on things like pencils and pens<\/li> <\/ul>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Different types of overbite<\/h3>    <p>There are <strong>two types of overbite<\/strong>: skeletal and dental. The skeletal kind is caused by irregularities in jawbone development.
