Although the findings are presented in a fairly technical way, it&#8217;s worth scrolling through if you want to see some pictures of diastema closure before and after.<\/p>    <p><strong>Gaps in baby teeth<\/strong> are pretty normal because at this stage the jaw is still growing and the teeth developing. As children grow up, lose their milk teeth, and get their adult teeth, any spaces often close naturally. If gaps are left then you can seek advice from a dentist.<\/p>    <p>People with spaces between their teeth need to take extra care with their oral health. The main one is a mismatch in the size of teeth vs jaw size. If your jaw is too big or teeth are too small then they won\u2019t align properly. <\/p>         <div class=\"dentist-tip\">          <div class=\"dentist-tip__title\">             <strong><strong>Ask a dentist: When is a diastema cause for concern?<\/strong><\/strong>        <\/div>          <div class=\"dentist-tip__content\">             <\/p>    <p>A diastema is a term for a space between teeth, often the upper front teeth in particular. For children, a noticeable gap between front teeth isn\u2019t generally harmful and will usually close when their permanent teeth come in. <\/p>    <p>Teens and adults may choose to have a diastema closed for cosmetic reasons. Treatment options include both orthodontic closure or restorative treatment to widen the teeth, like porcelain veneers.<\/p>    <p>A diastema between posterior teeth can be a food trap, and aside from being annoying, could lead to bone loss or tooth decay. The bit of skin between your lip and top front teeth is called your frenum and this can overgrow sometimes. Tongue thrusting can cause a mandibular diastema if the tongue is pushing against the lower teeth when swallowing. Both of these habits can be corrected in childhood to prevent long-term issues.&nbsp;<\/p>    <p>If you suffer from periodontitis (severe gum disease), you could end up losing teeth. The infection can also lead to bone loss in your jaw which can make your teeth move and create gaps.<\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a peg lateral?<\/h3>    <p>Sometimes the tooth called the second incisor &#8211; that\u2019s the one next to the very front two teeth &#8211; doesn\u2019t develop properly. This is known as a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gotoapro.org\/symptoms\/peg-lateral-incisors\/\" target=\"_blank\">peg lateral<\/a>, which is generally small and pointy. Because it is smaller than it should be, there might be gaps on either side.<\/p>    <p>Crowns, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/teeth-implants-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\">teeth implants<\/a> and veneers (see below) are all options for fixing a peg lateral.<\/p>    <h2 id=\"how-to-get-rid-of-gaps-in-teeth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get rid of gaps in teeth<\/h2>    <p>There are two approaches to closing gaps in teeth. Small gaps can often be filled using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/cosmetic-dentistry\/composite-bonding-teeth\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"25812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dental composite<\/a> or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dentaly.org\/en\/complete-guide-to-veneers\/composite-veneers\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"25810\" target=\"_blank\">veneers<\/a>. Larger gaps usually require treatment with braces, whereas smaller gaps can be closed in other ways &#8211; more on these in a moment.<\/p>    <p>You\u2019ll need to wait until all adult teeth have erupted before braces for a diastema can be considered.
